The history of the Monastery

The Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos

Once in the courtyard of the monastery, visitors can see on their right, we see the small old church of the Dormition of the Theotokos.

The small church was the first to be built, on the top of the cliff. It is 6 meters long and 3.5 meters wide and its walls end in a dome. This is where they keep the clay vessel filled with congealed oil that was found according to divine guidance.

The iconostasis of the church was built in 1840. Before it, stand two marble candlesticks of 1813, with the engraved inscription “Andreas”. Two icons of Byzantine art stand on the iconostasis, the icon of Saint John the Baptist and the icon of the Dormition of the Theotokos.

The Holy Trinity church

The second church, which is also the katholikon of the Monastery, is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It is a simple basilica with a narthex. It is 16 meters long and 6 meters wide and was built in the 16th century.

Inside the church, the wood-carved iconostasis catches the eye: a fine specimen of exquisite artistry and craftmanship, made by monks of the monastery. Its engraved details help portray scenes from the original sin, the fall of man from paradise, the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and the Last Supper. The iconostasis also features four byzantine art icons of the 18th century, as well as the Twelve Feasts. The entire iconostasis is an invaluable ornament in the katholikon of the Holy Trinity.

In the half-dome of the sanctuary there is a fresco of Our Lady of the Sign, dated 1832. The ceiling of the church is wood- carved.

In the narthex of the Holy Trinity, an imposing wood-carved icon stand holds the icon of the Maddona and Child “OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS”. The silver plating is a typical work of the Heptanese school of painting of the 17th century. The icon was donated to the Monastery by the doctor and former minister Gregorios Solomos of Lapanagoi.

Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Saviour

Just below the monastery itself, pilgrims can follow a descending footpath to access a chapel dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour. The chapel has been built in a natural cavity, a cave in the steep rock face, right underneath Voivodorachi. This holy place is known for the spring of holy water that flows year-round from a rock within.

Metochion (dependancy) of Evangelistria

Nearby to the Monastery, on the banks of the Selinountas, pilgrims can find the Holy Church of the Evangelistria, a dependency of the Monastery. Long derelict, the architecture of this stone-built church still catches the eye, and the fraternity is planning to renovate it for the world to see.

The ruined Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin awaits for it’s restoration.
